Nicole Scherzinger interviewed by #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about the lessons learned from starring as Norma Desmond in the latest revival of “Sunset Blvd.” on Broadway.
Helen Keller once said: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.” This quote applies to Nicole Scherzinger and her portrayal of Norma Desmond in “Sunset Blvd.” on Broadway.
In this re-imagined revival of the show, movie star Norma Desmond is haunted by her memories and dreams, and she yearns to return to the big screen.
“Sunset Blvd.” was nominated for seven Tony Awards, which include a nod in the prestigious “Best Revival of a Musical” category, which made it the most nominated revival of this Broadway season. The show won a total of three Tony Awards including “Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical” for Scherzinger, “Best Revival of a Musical” and “Best Lighting Design of a Musical.”
Scherzinger starred opposite Oliver winner and Tony nominee Tom Francis as Joe Gillies, a struggling screenwriter who can’t sell his scripts to the Hollywood studios but he may be her only hope, until their precarious and captivating relationship leads to disaster.
The show, directed by Jamie Lloyd, was performed at the St. James Theatre in Manhattan. The book is by Christopher Hampton and Don Black with music by the living legend Andrew Lloyd Webber. Fabian Aloise served as the choreographer.
This theater season, Scherzinger earned the Drama League Award for “Distinguished Performance Award,” as well as a Drama Desk nomination for “Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical” and a Tony nomination for “Best Actress in a Musical,” which will take place next week.
She was also nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award for “Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Musical,” and she was recognized with a Theatre World Award. The Theatre World Awards are presented annually at the end of the season to six actors and six actresses for their significant, reviewable, debut performances in a Broadway or Off-Broadway production.
On being a part of the highest-grossing Broadway season ever, she remarked, “Oh my Gosh. It is unbelievable. What a dream!”
“I’ve always dreamed of coming to Broadway, and now I get to be here, and I get to be here with so many of the greats and the masters,” she acknowledged.
“What a beautiful season, especially since COVID,” Scherzinger admitted. “It is so wonderful to know that theatre is just alive and thriving, and we are penetrating the hearts of so many.”
Scherzinger opened up about how she taps into the vulnerability and emotional nature of playing her complex character Norma Desmond. “I do a lot of prayer and meditation because I need to anchor myself,” she revealed.
“It’s got to come from a really, really, really deep, soulful and spiritual place,” she explained.
“Also, just trusting in the work, and all the work over the last two years that I’ve put into this,” Scherzinger added.On the lessons learned from this role, play, and “Sunset Blvd.” journey, Scherzinger stated, “It taught me that I am braver than I thought I was.”
“So, hopefully, I can inspire other people as well to know that they are braver than they know, and stronger than they realize,” she underscored.
Scherzinger had great words about two-time Grammy award-winning Swedish songwriter, producer and
artist Jonas Myrin. “I love Jonas so much. He is my brother. He is an angel,” she exclaimed.
On her definition of the word success, she revealed, “Success means able to live out your purpose and your passion.”
One thing is for certain… Nicole Scherzinger is ready for her close-up!
